Soul Spa presents ‘DJ Format ‘Legendary Hip-hop DJ, producer and recording artist DJ Format will be performing a live DJ set with support. DJ Format Bio: DJ Format’s debut album “Music For The Mature B-Boy”was one of the slowburn success stories of 2003. An album of soulful, funk-fuelled hip hop packed with infectious beats and lyrical dexterity, it delivered the promise of his early releases forMo’ Wax and Bomb Hip Hop. Received with quiet acclaim in the press it quickly became a word of mouth triumph, going on to establish itself as one of the most successful debut artist albums from the UK alternative/urban scene. The campaign was successful for a number of reasons not least its supporting batch of three incredible music videos all directed by the then unknown Ruben Fleischer. The most famous of these will undoubtedly be the rap and breakdancing costumed animals of’We Know Something You Dont Know’ featuring the vocals of Chali 2na and Akil of Jurassic 5 – played out by a shark and tiger respectively on the big screen it is an unforgettable piece of feel good hip hop. “Music For The…” also led toFormat supporting (alongside regular collaborator MC Abdominal) Jurassic 5 on their European tour, and through subsequent touring in 2003 establishing Format as one of the hottest live hip hop tickets in town culminating in triumphant appearances at the Reading & Leeds festivals of 2004 and worldwide touring taking in the whole of Europe, North America and Australia. 2005’s follow up album “If You Can’t Join ‘Em… Beat ‘Em”saw Format step up a gear, tightening the loops still further for a tougher, leaner sound. A heavy schedule of acclaimed shows followed the release throughout 2005/06. As A&R men fall over themselves to find the next multi-million selling act, it’s easy to dismiss an artist whose records exist outside current trends. Format’s records are a celebration of the music he loves and that passion is shared with a growing audience. This is music with the feel of hip-hop’s golden era, raw drums & tight loops lurk in every groove. So whilst most producers turn out a product according to the latest whims of fashion and trend, Format creates (with a little help from his friends) personal documents that resonate with the like-minded listener. In 2006 Format was asked to contribute to the successfulFabric DJ mix series. Format’s “fabriclive 27″ was one of the most well received of the series. His DJ sets are renowned for their boundary-crossing selection of the funk, soul, rock & hip-hop and his fabric mix showed of a condensed version of the party set that he’s built a solid reputation on. This was followed up by his own underground mix of obscure Eastern European beats, the now highly collectable ‘European Vacation’ CD. A recent flurry of activity has seen Format deliver another mix album, this time for the legendary Fania label, applying his signature b-boy style to the world’s foremost catalogue of latin music. Alongside this, Format’s discreetly released 12” tribute to James Brown ‘Stealin’ James’, has been a huge success both with DJ’s and dancefloors alike. Format is currently hard at work on his third album. DJ format will be joined by Clarendon favourite and one of the UK’s rising DJ stars, Sam Redmore. 1. When creating a new Post always… a) Assign it to it’s relevant category or categories. Remember, some posts might well be relevant to visitors in different categories so tick as many as you think worthwhile. b) Add a “Featured Image” (bottom right-hand corner of the screen). This way, when in “Archive” view, there will be an image on the screen (e.g. think of your long list of old poster images). c) Try and remember to fill in the “Rich WP SEO” box under the main Post content area. This will go someway to helping your Google ranking. 2. When Uploading new images always… a) Try and name the actual filename as something useful (i.e. relevant and memorable) and which might include a useful keyword for Google. You’ll soon have hundreds of images and searching for one in amongst filenames like “img1028r67rfg.jpg” is not going to be much fun. b) At the very least rename the image in the box that isn’t greyed out.

The Clarendon Presents a “Come Wine with me” event called “CALL MY QUAFF” Wine Tasting Competition on Tuesday 16th April. A light-hearted blind-tasting competition organised by The Clarendon and Enotria World Wine. and hosted by Enotria’s own Wine Expert Tim Hollis-Carroll. The event is for teams of three people and follows the format of TV’s “Call My Bluff” panel game. Each round a nominated amount of glasses of wine are poured and then it is the contestants job to match the wine with the description your host Tim gives you. Note, you will not be given grape varieties, and countries of origin, but descriptions of the taste of the wine to match, i.e. Ripe, fresh fruit aromas of peach & melon precede a round juicy palate packed with tropical and citrus flavours. This therefore means that any novice can take part as we are only testing your sense of taste, not your knowledge of wines. There will be additional prizes for anybody who can guess the grape variety and country of origin as well. One description is the correct one for the wine in the glass, the others are totally false and full of red herrings. The contestants have to taste and then pick which description matches the wine in the glass. The winners will be the team that matches the most wines to the correct descriptions. Like any event at The Clarendon, the primary goal is having a good time, and we intend you and us to have just that. If you are interested in entering a team please call in at the bar and pick up an application form or email ben@theclarendonpub.com. The entry fee is £20 per team, with all profits going to Myton Hospice. There will be a range of Prizes, all alcoholic on offer for an array of achievements as well as a Top Prize provided by Enotria for winning the competition.

The Clarendon’s “Touched by the Hand of Mod” night hosts a Mod and music legend for a very special Bank holiday special Mod Party. We welcome Dean Rudland as our very special guest DJ on Good Friday 29th march 2013. Dean Rudland Profile: As a South London-based enthusiast for jazz, soul and funk Dean has led a fairly charmed life in the world of music since walking out of university in 1990 and straight into a job at Acid Jazz Records. His teenage years: spent in mod clubs, jazz clubs and with plenty of record collecting, had fortunately prepared him for his new career, which involved clubs and record buying. As well as working with some of the top UK-based soul acts of the 90s, such as Jamiroquai and the Brand New Heavies, Dean’s abiding love of old music led to him being drafted-in by Blue Note as lead compiler of their Blue Series of compilations. My Blue Break Beats series sold over a 100,000 copies and opened the door for him to work on all sorts of catalogue projects, including the relaunch of EMI’s Stateside label and, best of all, a call from Roger Armstrong at Ace to see if Dean would be interested on helping out on the BGP label. First dean contented himself with rummaging through Ace’s deliciously full vaults to put out the “Super Breaks”, “Super Funk” and “Living In The Streets” series, plus further helpings of funk and jazz with a touch of soul. In more recent years he’s developed his fascination for the music of Memphis, and the American South in general, and was involved in deals that have brought the Sounds Of Memphis and Fame labels under the Ace umbrella. Outside Ace Dean has been a label owner, music publisher and a broadcaster of sorts. He is one of the presenters of the monthly Modcast podcast. DJing continues to be important too, and he often plays exclusive new discoveries from those still-packed Ace vaults. Expect a big dancefloor, hoards of dancers and a bloody cracking night folks. Free entry. 9pm-1am.

Twinning Towns, Twinning Pubs. The Clarendon is very proud and excited to be twinning itself with Cafe de 1ste Aanleg in Heemstede, (Leamington’s twin town) in Holland. We are not sure whether or not this has been done before, and we are all very excited about the prospect of meeting like-minded people and developing relationships both working and social. The Clarendon will be sending out a team of raconteurs and reprobates to Heemstede in September to meet our Dutch counterparts, where staff exchanges and other cultural programmes will be discussed over shandy or two. Leamington Underground Cinema will be joining the expedition party on their travels to capture the event, and a few other things too.

2012…we have lost some legends…a Bee gee, a Beastie Boy, a Monkee and a few divas. Well, we were thinking why not have a party paying homage to our musical heroes that have passed away over the years by theming our legendary Halloween Party around that. So yes, The Clarendon’s Halloween Fancy dress party is called “Waking The Dead”, and that is exactly what we will be doing. The fancy dress theme is “dead musicians”, the soundtrack will be provided by messrs Babbs and Rich T and the place will be bopping, not of the apple variety however. Free entry all night. Great prizes for Fancy dress all night.

So the nineties are cool again…when were they not? The decade of Britpop, grunge and Quentin Tarrantino…Madchester, Friends and Cool Britannia. the decade that gave us a reason to watch telly before we headed out to the pub on Friday evenings, and a reason to not be too disappointed when we were thrown out at early closing times so we could rush back to watch the unedited version of, yes TFI Friday. Internet was just starting, only yuppies had mobile phones and we drank more in pubs most importantly. We hung out in person, social media was reading the paper with your mates, it was more virtual insanity than reality and online was probably a drug reference. To celebrate our love of the nineties, and of the particular TV show that captured everything that was so magnificently great about it “TFI Friday”, we will be having a “TFI Friday 1st January 2016” party for NYE. Now folks, we love NYE and always go to town for it, and so do all of you good folk, and this will be no different. The soundtrack is obvious – expect a little bit of everything from the decade – from Britpop to grunge, the Spice Girls to Jurassic 5, R&B classics to dance classics and everything else in between and inclusive of 1990 to 1999. The decor, well we will be recreating the set of TFI Friday on a budget of course. The dress code – well it is fancy dress of course – TV, music and film characters/stars from the decade of Toy Story, Buffy, Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Friends, The Matrix and so many more classics – the decade of Oasis, Nirvana, Biggie Smalls and Guns n Roses – where to start is the question – there is just too much choice. Antics – well this is when you guys come in and TFI Friday was about some crowd participation. We will be hosting our very own “Freak or Unique” competition at 10pm sharp. The dance floor will be cleared and anyone is welcome to showcase their unique gift. There will be a £50 bar-tab on the night up for grabs so get involved. We will need any entrants to have entered by 6pm that evening. Just email info@theclarendonpub.com with your details and your unique talent and you will be given details then. We will also be asking anyone to send in letters to to 2016. Like a letter to Santa, what do you wish for in 2016. These will remain anonymous and be read out by us on the night. The best story though will win the author a £50 bar-tab. You will have to waive your anonymity though to claim. And that will be enough – there will be the usual great atmosphere, a room full of good eggs and the optimism that comes with NYE. At 12am we will be showing on all of our screens Big Ben’s chimes, and sing Auld Lang Syne, and party as if it really was 1999. Tickets are on sale now. Early bird tickets are only £5 and can be purchased at www.theclarendonpub.com. general release tickets will go on sale from November 1st and be £7.50 each.

In homage to Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures, we at The Clarendon fancied a Halloween party with a difference – with a heavy dose of spooky Latin influence, we present something that is just that. Djs will be rocking a big dance floor with a spooky soundtrack and fancy dress encouraged – “Day of the dead”. We will also have a make -up artist to paint any faces free of charge.

The Clarendon’s legendary sell out NYE parties are a Leamington institution and this year we plan to raise the bar further. We are bringing the big apple New York City’s spirit of the late 1970’s to Leamington Spa and The Clarendon. Think…The disco culture of Studio 54, Copacabana and depicted most famously in the film Saturday Night fever meets the Brooklyn B’boy culture, and the Blaxploitation films and cutlure of the decade What exactly does that mean – an incredible soundtrack of disco, funk, soul and old school, the original hip hop married with a dress code reflecting this – disco divas, Brooklyn b’boys, Blaxploitation or roller girls – we are going decadent with the decorations, and as always a giant dancefloor to ‘boogie the night away’. Leamington’s premier cocktail pub will also be going big on the cocktails – with a themed menu for the evening. Ticket only as always – £7 each – these are available onlinewww.theclarendonpub.com or from the The Clarendon. Doors open at 9pm – bar closes at 2.30pm. Music until 3am.

On the last Friday of the month join us at the gateway to payday weekend celebrating the art of cocktail making and appreciation of the spirits that make them. The history, the developments and the twists that have created the path of evolution for these libations. The romance, the glamour and of course the alcohol content! Join like minded people in our cosy restaurant area and immerse yourself in our world of cocktail indulgence. You will be guided by our very own GM Suzie, Adam our manager who has recently returned from a month studying at a bartending school in Brooklyn, NYC and Mangrove spirit guru Sean. Each month we will focus on a different spirit, exploring the history of the spirit, a spirit tasting and then explore the cocktails that the spirit stars in. You will then get your own opportunity to make the cocktails themselves, and of course enjoy your concotions. This month’s event will be focusing on “Rum”. The capacity for each event is very limited so get in touch quick to snap up a ticket! Tickets are priced at £25. For this you will not only receive a knowledgable rum tasting presented by our team and also 3 signature Rum cocktails each to make and drink. We will also provide some nibbles inspired the by the spirit itself. Tickets are available now from behind the bar or online. please visit www.theclarendonpub.com to purchase tickets.
